Subject: [Chennai Trekking Club] Water is a killer!
To: The Chennai Trekking Club <sachennait...@googlegroups.com>

Dear members,

It came to my knowledge that a few friends went on a private trek to Nagala today (outside CTC) and one of them drowned in one of the pools. I don't know the exact circumstances but cannot imagine what impact it would have on family, friends and relatives facing the loss of someone...

Many people get excited seeing the beautiful pictures of scenic pools and waterfalls in our post trek emails,  friends Facebook albums, our web site and forum. During treks I see non-swimmers getting excited watching others having fun, splashing, diving and swimming in the crystal clear pools and get tempted to get in and finally get caught by surprise.... Water IS a silent killer. Around 50 people die at Marina beach alone every year!

Going forward we will make it mandatory for non-swimmers to carry a swimming tube on our treks to any location which passes near deep water. No exceptions. A life is worth more then 75 rupees to buy a tube available in any sports shop nearby. Any non-swimmer showing up on Saturday morning or Friday night without a tube will be sent back immediately by our organizers.

This safety precaution and a number of other general do's and don't-s guidelines had already been captured in our "club members rules" document during a recent organizers meeting. I request each of our members to carefully read through this -

Let us enjoy our treks but at the same time be responsible.
