Reptile Biology Workshop

Madras Crocodile Bank Trust
25/27 Feb 2011

An increasing number of people are gaining interest in herpetology in India. Over the last decade or so, herpetology or even simply working with reptiles has grown to be an actual career opportunity and an aspiration for many. Unfortunately, avenues to pursue this aspiration are very few and those that exist often stem from shaky foundations.

The Gerry Martin Project is filling this void by offering experiences, workshops and eventually, courses to provide contextual learning in this field. It is also striving to instill ethics amongst people who are interested in wildlife and its conservation.

This three-day workshop will help individuals build skills, learn about various aspects of reptile biology and also develop a more contextual understanding of the field of herpetology and reptile biology. It is an intensive experience, bringing various aspects of reptile biology from natural history and behaviour to taxonomy and husbandry.

The program will begin at 8 AM on the 25th of February and end at 5 PM on the 27th.
Gerry Martin will run and facilitate the program along with the staff at the Croc Bank.

Module includes:

  • Hands on learning

  • Reptile tracking with Irulas

  • Husbandry Aspects

  • Behavioural enrichment work with reptiles

  • Snakebite and first aid protocol

  • Various learning presentations

Hi all,

Its great to find takers for a workshop of this kind. I have already received positive responses from about 6 people.

I'm sure a lot of people are interested but are hesitant because of the safety issues. I can assure you that these people are professionals and they have been doing it for quite sometime now. So if your only concern is safety, forget it and send in a mail to me.

The other concern is the schedule which as of now starts on Friday morning. But if we have a sizable number (say around 15 or so), I can speak to Conan, the organizer of this workshop, and try to have the interesting and the important events on Saturday and Sunday.

As regards the venue, the workshop is conducted in the Madras Crocodile Bank which is about 35 kms from Insti. 5 MTC buses ply in this route and hence, the expenses for transportation will be a bare minimum. Also, there isn't any need for boarding and lodging as we can return to Insti after the workshop.

I will send a comprehensive mail with all the details in 3 days time.

Feel free to mail me for further clarifications.
