This is what the endsem pattern will be:

- 2 unseen poems: Analyse the theme/form/tone/technique, etc

- 3 reference to contexts - will be given a few lines of the poems we've learnt - explain it in its context. Short answers.

- 1 short essay - around 300 words/2 pages on a specific poem.

- 1 long essay - things like comparing 2 poems we've learnt.

@ma'am: Please correct me if I've gotten something wrong.

Regards,
Girish Ananth

That's absolutely correct, Girish. I've also included the marks breakup below, as well as the poems for detailed study.

2. Three reference to context questions 5 x 3 = 15
3. One short essay (300 words) 1 x 10 = 10
4. One long essay (500 words) 1 x 15 = 15

Total = 60 marks/3 hours
1st May 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in room HSB 336.

Poems for detailed study

Shakespeare - Sonnet 18
Herbert - Easter Wings
Coleridge - Kubla Khan

Mam,

Are we allowed to have a printout of the poems during the exam?

Not this time, since the paper has reference to context questions and
you need to identify the poems from which the extracts are taken.

Ma'am,

What are the essay-type questions based on? Should we remember the gist of all poems?

The short essay is on a specific poem and the long essay may need you
to analyse more than one poem. You will be able to answer the
questions better if you are familiar with the entire content of each
poem.

Could we atleast get the poems for the long essay type questions so we could write for 300 or 500 words as the case maybe. Or Ma'am could you maybe give us the poems in the exam hall.

Yes, ma'am. We were not aware of this until today and remembering long poems like 'Kubla Khan' or 'Love Song..' within a short span is quite tough. So can you consider this request?

I already announced in class that the exam would not be open-book.
There are only nine poems to be studied and it is not unreasonable to
expect you to know them, since we have discussed them all in detail.

Hi,
Hope you all had a great semester.

What I realized after Quiz-I and End Semester Examination of Poetry HS5610 ?
That our ma'm luvvvvvvvs romanticism in poetry :P :) (ma'm no offense!!)
I got less marks in quiz one for that question there was no way I was
touching that question again this semester :)

happy holidays everyone.
( the idea to write this mail came when i was writing the exam but now
that i'm actually writing it, it seems a bit scary and cheeky )

Well, if you mean the Romantic poets of the 19th century (Coleridge
and Keats), you are quite right! Although Romantic poetry is different
from 'romanticism' in general. :-) And thank you for the mail. I
enjoyed the course with you all and I hope everyone had at least a
little fun with poetry. We won't be using the google group again, but
I have a separate mailing list for poetry. Anyone who would like to
receive interesting (according to me!) poems on a semi-regular basis
can let me know and I'll add you to the list. Good luck to you all!

Best,
Meghna

Sure ma'am . That would actually be fun. To have poems every now and then to reflect upon. Do add me to the mailing list.
