We are sorry that the RS wing of the SWG did not have the contact details of the hall presidents of these halls. Kindly forward this mail to your hall groups and the Research scholars you know.

Dear friends, Student Welfare Group (SWG) is a body of IITKgp students under Dean of Students' Affairs and it is attached to the Counseling Center, IITKgp. The Research Scholars' section of the SWG has been designed to make a researcher's stay in IIT Kharagpur a happy, fruitful and peaceful one. In order to achieve this goal, we have planned to take initiatives in different directions, with the help of experts such as counselors and targeting the specific needs of the research scholars. Some , which are already in place are: 1. Department Representatives. 2. Mentorship program for newly admitted research scholars. Some of the planned programs are: Session on effective communication. Session on problems faced during research and how to deal the stress. Session balancing professional and private lives efficiently. Session self-confidence and leadership skills. Apart from all these, another important aspect of SWG is its interface with the counseling center. The number of depression and suicide cases in all over the IITs are growing at a exponential speed, so as the number of students seeking help from the counseling center to adjust with the profession pressures. One of our major responsibilities is to provide a friendly support in any professional or personal problems, we facilitate the interactions with the counselors who help students to cope-up with the situation. All the details are handled by the counselors only and they are completely confidential. The counseling center has a hall intervention program in place for dealing with such issues. Under this program, each hall of residence has been assigned one counselor, who will have regular formal and informal sessions with the hall boarders, will help them to deal with any problem faced and to stay mentally happy. To coordinate with the hall intervention program, we need some Hall Coordinators , who will act between the counselors and the hall boarders. They will be given a GateKeeper training to gain efficiency in this job. On the other hand, department mentors are there for assisting the new comers. Department mentor is different from a department representative in many respects. While representative attends the official meetings and other formalities, there can be more than one mentor in a department to address the personal issues faced by new scholars. We really need some enthusiastic people from the research scholars halls.
