Boot using ubuntu 9.10 live cd.

Then do the steps as suggested in the following link.
http://sparkingguy.wordpress.com/2009/12/29/reinstalling-grub-2-from-livecd/

After completed the above process, shutdown and reboot your system (
remove live cd now )

Now you cannot see the windows in grub loader. cool .

$ sudo update-grub2

Type the above command, and reboot your system.

Now you can see the other operating systems ( windows) in grub2. :-)

Try this and update here.

Please do not TOP post...

You have installed Ubuntu Outside the windows. I assume that you have tried to install in separate partition on same Harddisk.

Try to reinstall again as it was not installed properly. Check CD for defect, Always try to install from USB.

Sometimes it happen that while installation , Installer unable to write MBR..
I told to reinstall on same partition.

Best way to use bootable USB pendrive to start with Linux when you are not sure about installation and debugging things.

It will work for sure. ( if you installed the ubuntu correctly )

99% wont occur, if we didnt disturb the grub.

try to reinstall ubuntu one more time in the same partition.

please refer the following pdf to install ubuntu as dual boot with M$

http://www.slideshare.net/kanchilug/how-to-install-ubuntu-as-dual

Dont think like remove ubuntu.

As a student, you can learn it quickly and will throw out the M$ from
your laptop asap :-)
can can !

You are telling her the procedure of "How to restore grub". This is Ok when you have proper installation of ubuntu and  MBR got deleted..
procedure is not fit because the Installation is not done correctly. This is why I told her to reinstall.

installing ubuntu.
