Hi,
I am not able to use internet on Ubuntu 12.04 in IIT. After boot up, it works fine for 5-10 minutes and then the proxy automatically logs out. After this all the tabs continues to show "Connecting" but no webpages are rendered. Even the proxy login page does not open. I have tried both automatic and manual IP settings. What could be the problem? It is working fine on Windows 7.
Thanks

are other browser running fine? did you check chromium-browser? check so we can get clue whether its problem of firefox or ubuntu or network

Just a hunch, try opening Google.com after you are logged out. Often proxy highjack one address for password prompt.

There are certain steps to check out where problem is and i think you must be aware of them
i) try to ping google.
ii) then try to ping your router
if pings does happen. Then problem is on the service provider side.and on the other hand if ping to google is happening through terminal and browser is not opening google then browser is meshing around something.
iii) If ping to router is happening and net is not working, write the IP of your router(You can know about your public IP from (Whatismyip.com) and then put that in your browser
iii) Login in the router and check where problem is but as you say that on windows net is working fine that means that router and net is ok.

Along with that kindly let us know how you are doing changes while shifting to static IP configuration to DHCP, through network manager/WICD ot through terminal.

It will be usefull if you can share your ifcfg-eth0 with us.

May not work for everyone, but I solved this in 12.04 by going to "Edit Connections"(right click on your internet connection logo) and unticking the "Require IPv4 for this connection to complete" box.

Hi all,
Sorry for late reply. I got busy with majors and ppts. I noticed today that the proxy doesn't logs out but the Internet keep going on and off. It remains on for 10 seconds, then goes off for 30-40 seconds and like that.
I tried to ping my public IP (10.189.52.45) but got nothing back. However when I pinged 10.136.1.1 (Hostel Gateway), it behaved just like the browser. About 30-40% packets were lost each time. I have already unchecked "Require IPv4 for this connection to complete" box.
And where can I find my ifcfg-eth0? I read somewhere that ubuntu doesn't use these type of files.
Also how can configure proxy settings for terminal? I have been trying to do this for very long time and have tried every method available. I was able to do it for individual commands like wget, git but not for all the commands. Like I can't ping any website when I am connected to internet.
Thanks and Regards

Rishi 30 40 percent packet loss is huge considering it is plan environment. Are you able to browse smoothly using any other OS.
