Abstract:
HVDC applications have increased in popularity in the last two decades. This presentation provides key comparisons between LCC-HVDC and VSC-HVDC technology. Major design considerations and challenges regarding an HVDC installation will be discussed. Additionally, an update on HVDC growth in the US and India will be provided, and some site visit information will also be shared.
Speakers Bio:
Dr. Tapan Manna has been with Burns & McDonnell since 2009, working as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Currently he serves as a Technical Consultant in the areas of HVDC and FACTS. Dr. Manna has over 25 years of experience in the power industry and academia.
Tapan obtained his PhD from Tennessee Technological University (TTU). Before relocating to the United States, he served as a lecturer for two years at the College of Engineering and Management, Kolaghat, India. He has over 10 years of power utility experience with Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) Limited and West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL). The majority of his utility experience includes power plant operations, and start-up testing and commissioning of substations and generating stations. Prior to joining Burns & McDonnell, he worked for URS Corporation, Black & Veatch Corporation, and Tennessee Technological University.
Dr. Manna’s specialties and interest include power systems, power systems protection, grounding, lightning, HVDC and FACTS, and HV/EHV power apparatus. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Texas, a registered Chartered Engineer in the Institution of Engineers (India), and an IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer. He is also a senior IEEE member and a member of CIGRE, Sigma Xi, and the Institution of Engineers (India). Dr. Manna has been a member of and contributor to several IEEE/Cigre study committees and working groups. He also delivers technical speeches for Burns & McDonnell, T&D World, IEEE chapters, and universities.
