Abstract: There is a crisis of expectations in our society that is going
though economic growth but without sufficient inclusion. It is not the
lack of awareness or institutional willingness that is responsible for
lack of adequate connect between diversified need of different
disadvantaged segments of society and nature. It is partly the way we
conceive educational pedagogy and partly the way we create demands on us
from the under-served Sections of the society.

Prof. Anil Gupta will discuss several instruments though which we can
foster connect, forge new partnerships and facilitate new mechanisms for
social transformation. The leaders of higher education institutions can
help transform the current context by unfolding the grossly underutilized
power of youth. The Speaker will discuss how industrial and slum
shodhyatras, apart from the rural ones, can fill certain gaps, but there
will be many more issues to be sorted out. Some were addressed by Amulya
Reddy years ago through 'Ungra' project. Various IITs have made sincere
efforts to forge social and industrial connect but, surely, there is a
huge scope for improving the connections. Innovations that push the
frontier of technology and the ones that solve persistent social problems
can thrive in the same ecosystem. Excellence need not be traded off with
relevance or equity.

Given the challenges involved in climate change adaptation, innovations
that enhance resilience at community, industry and firm levels may
require collaborative innovations more than individual pursuits. In fact,
many more future challenges will need similar collaborative efforts.
Fostering collaboration across disciplines, regions, institutional
boundaries will need not just new mindsets but also new platforms.

Platform, purpose, passion, performance and persistence are essential
ingredients of this transformation. The Speaker hope we can together
create that pressure on ourselves which dilutes inertia, promotes
innovation and facilitates inclusion.

About the Speaker:
Prof. Anil Gupta earned his Ph.D. degree in management from Kurukshetra
University in 1986 after his master's in Biochemical Genetics in 1974 from
Haryana Agricultural University, Haryana. He is currently a professor in
the Centre for Management in Agriculture. Professor Gupta is a Member,
National Innovation Council, Chaired by Adviser to Prime Minister;
Visiting Professor of Innovation Management in Emerging Markets, European
Business School, Berlin; Fellow, National Academy of Agricultural
Sciences; Fellow, The World Academy of Art and Science, California 2001.
