Title: Global Competition, Technology Management and The Prospects for India


Abstract: Among the major global trends today are economic growth, a
changed world order, rapidly growing trade, and a shift to services.
Another major trend that is underway is the shift to information. I will
outline these trends, and discuss what they mean for developed,
transitional and developing economies. Then I will discuss global
competition, the role of technology management and the likely prospects for
India in the next few decades.


Brief Profile

Uday Karmarkar (www.anderson.ucla.edu/x990.xml) is the LA Times Professor
of Technology and Strategy, and Director of the UCLA Business and
Information Technologies (BIT) global research project at the UCLA
Anderson School (www.anderson.ucla.edu/bit.xml). His research interests
are in operations strategy and technology management in manufacturing,
service and information industries. Professor Karmarkar has published over
55 research papers (OR, MS, EJOR, JOM, Econometrica, OBHP) and 20 articles
(HBR, CMR, book chapters) and edited four research volumes. He has founded
two academic journals and has served on many editorial boards. He has
undertaken projects in strategy, business development,technology
management, industrial marketing, and supply chain management with
over 50 firms and public sector organizations in the US, Europe and Asia.

He previously taught at the University of Chicago and the University of
Rochester, where he held the Xerox Chair in Operations and was founder and
Director of the Center for Manufacturing and Operations Management. He
holds a B.Tech. from I.I.T. Bombay and a Ph.D. in Management Science from
M.I.T. He was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT-B in 1997 and
received the IIT-B Distinguished Service Award in 2003; he was made an
Honorary Fellow of the Institute in 2008. He received the MSOM (Informs)
Distinguished Service Award in 2003 and an IBM Faculty Research award in
2004. He is on the Advisory Board of the Service Research and Innovation
Initiative (SRII), a consortium founded by IBM and other high tech firms,
and on the Council for the Digital Strategy of Chile for the Ministry of
the Economy, Chile.
