Some of you may be wondering whether it is ok to cover a large part of the course using curated resources, what if someone 'outsources' most of the teaching in this manner, etc.

"In your opinion, what portions of a course can be curated and what portions must be recorded by the instructor?"

Please post your opinion. Your responses may help to frame a policy on this point!

I am a school teacher , and my feedback is based on school background upto sr. secondary course. The introduction, learning objective, key terms explanation at the beginning,  reflection , asking questions, giving assignments, encouraging students to watch  reference materials, school specific activities, board based activities, ( eg CBSE) like joyful learning, activities in the text book, practicals result and discussion or interpretation , art integration, learning by doing, extended learning,Formative assignments  like some part of course in which teacher to students interaction and familiarity  are required should be recorded by the instructor,

The main body of course  in the various forms are available in  website as like videos , ppt, animations etc should be curated by the instructor.Because majority of teachers are not professional video recorders and editors. Not have much infrastructural facilities like camera, lighting computer with high ram, editing softwares etc. professionally made videos and such materials can be combined by a teacher depend on the course flow. example lecture by a good presenter and and activities / practicals recorded in good laboratories, real life videos  etc.  can be  curated. as these are difficult for teachers to make.Gliches can make a best best teacher in face to face class  as reputed worst teacher among parents and  in online world.

Where ever a familiarity with instructor and learner  is required, their only recording demands.

I feel if the videos are available on the YouTue through Creative Commons license then you should re-use those videos as a general content for some topics.

For specific examples that you want your students to learn (For example any specific Java language program) then you can make those videos and share it with students.

So your time will be saved in creating videos for topics which are already available on YouTube and then you can focus on taking your students through deep understanding of particular topics. It will also allow you to focus on student engagement and course orchestration.

I think curated portions can be used for any part of the course to cover content as long as the instructor feels it covers the delivery in ways he/she does or does it even better. It is important that the instructor goes through the content and highlights the exact portions that the students should focus on. But the instructor should record the introduction and summary of the module based on the specific class response/feedback for completeness and give time for discussions and Q&A after every lecture/module.

In my opinion explanation of any concept should be recorded by the instructor and examples related to the concept can be curated.

Based on my recent online teaching experience with UG Chemical Engineering students during lock down, I feel that-

1.Curated portion of the course may contain animations, simulations ,video clips of the leaders of the profession, and judiciously selected teaching portions from open courses available. Students are not only watching the curated contents but also the curator himself. And they do watch very critically. They can appreciate the efforts taken in curating process and that builds the trust so very necessary between teacher and learner. Curating should not give the impression as if teacher is offloading his own job. At no point in the course , student should feel that he/she has been abandoned by the teacher in mela of the online content.

2.Teacher should provide a perspective to the students on how to look at the curated content. He should also hold a small quiz to test students' understanding of the content. Discussion forum should be used to highlight the concepts learnt and also the difficulties faced.Teacher should clear these difficulties through his own recording or through face to face session. In fact , the course design should anticipate the muddy points in the curated content and make the teacher support available there.

3.Teacher's own recording should contain the emphasis on key concepts/ fundamentals involved in the course. He may refer to curated content studied by student and give a scenario to test the learning based on that content and thus bring out the boundaries of the content in sharper way.

4.Teacher's recordings should do the job of weaving the curated contents in the perspective of the earning outcomes planned fo the course.

This is applicable for outcome based modules. Mostly the teaching resources which are available online in the form of videos, text, web documents or animation may explain a topic or simply serve the purpose of content delivery, however, they don,t,in most of the cases, tell what students should be able to do at the end of the learning experience.Secondly even the content delivery may not cover the complete aspects of the topic. For example in explanation of ion exchange process in treatment of water most of the videos show the exchange of cations and anions for demineralisation but they do not delve into simple softening. In some online resources concept is not clearly explained and may be difficult for a cross section of students to understand the same. Hence, according to me course curation may be adhered to during online teaching transitioning period, however, it is better for teachers to learn and practice inherent techniques prerequisite for good online teaching.

Concepts can be curated and applications with tool demonstration can be recorded. Also, if possible, a session on real time discussion could be arranged to benefit all the learners.

Small videos of the related topic can be curated as that will create interest among the students. and while video is running in between we can put some questions by pausing it that will create interest among the students. learning dialogues will be helpful to the students to be creative. PPTs can also be used to make videos interesting like for eg. in recording videos through screencastomatic or any other recorder and using H5p for putting questions in between them the written material on screen will be helpful to students to get proper answers.

I feel datta..@mitpune says it best. If there is good content available, the teacher should be allowed to  use it without having requirements for creating a certain number/hours of video lectures/podcasts etc. imposed on her. In my experience, many students can learn with this minimal amount of support from the instructor - whose role here is just to point to the way the student needs to go. Having said that, a good teacher can provide invaluable context to the content and relate it to local conditions.

small videos of less than 10 minutes can be used for the curation as these videos are easily available also they are easily extended and  in between we can add some learning dialogues. we can also put some own words as meaning or translation in that video. we can take some ppts and podcast also.

content that will help students understand the concept you want them to understand can be curated. It does not matter what portion of course you curate. what matter is to facilitate that curated content into learning. we can do that by inserting in video quiz and activities. some concepts or part of course that require your expertise that you can record yourself. content which you feel like this should connect you with student should be recorded by instructor.

Hi,

I feel the topics that can be best explained through animations can be curated. The Institution might want the teachers to create their own content. Also, the assignment can be given to the students where students can be taught data curation skills.

I think that common Introduction, theory, objective, and method are curated. Application of principle / theory should be recorded.

'Concept understanding' can be curated but building that concepts with the help of worked-out examples/illustrations should record by the instructor.

One can consider, that portion to be curated which basically excite a learner on that given topic and the instructor must describe the topic for better understanding of the learner.
