Subject: 5th University Scholars Leadership Symposium 2014 in Phnom Penh - Cambodia

Dear Prof. R. Nagarajan,

Humanitarian Affairs, UK, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Cambodia, invites Promising Students of Leading Universities to the 5th University Scholars Leadership Symposium to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from August 1 to 7, 2014.

The theme for this year’s Symposium is; “Dream It. Plan It. Do It”. The  “Leadership in Social Change Symposium” is specially designed to provide the next generation of leaders with an understanding of key humanitarian issues; to equip them with essential life skills; to inspire them through motivational talks, to involve them in sustainable activities and to allow them to learn through experiential service programs.

The Phnom Penh Symposium 2014 will include training sessions on leadership and communication, project management and implementation. Expert humanitarians, such as Pushpa Basnet (CNN Hero of the Year, 2012), Robin Lim (CNN Hero of the Year, 2011), Geraldine Cox (Founder of Sunrise Children’s Villages, Cambodia) and professional motivational trainers will inspire the delegates to take concrete action over their lives.

Humanitarian Affairs believes in the holistic development of global-minded and forward thinking leaders. This symposium would certainly be a great learning opportunity for those who Aspire to be the Best, not only in terms of personal and professional development, but more importantly, in nurturing social responsibility and action.

If you would like to know more about this event, you may access the Symposium’s official website : www.universityscholars.org.uk. This is a life-changing experience not to be missed !

Best Wishes,

Humanitarian Affairs Asia

We need to say no somehow. We have to make sure that the mail does not even reach the students.

Lets just tell them that its worth the money they ask for. Its a good experience but not something which should be promoted by the institute.
OR
Lets tell them that we recently got to know from one of the delegates at the symposium that they are running this as some means to move money into these countries to run some rackets

We need to give a solid reason SOON.

The point of it being a symposium that did not live up to our expectations could be put in, since most of the lectures were "inspirational". Though the experience was incredible, it would be more prudent to use the resources of the alumni office to fund technical events, or business events.

@Jithin, how is this mail supposed to be? A decent length mail, with acknowledgements from all of us?

Though it was a good experience, the hands on part was missing. The lecture series that happens in institute is of the same quality. It may not make a lot of sense for students to take a week off when they can get a similar experience through the inspirational figures which visit the institute frequently. Or we could just invest that cash to enhance the quality of EML/Alumni Lecture series. - This may appeal to Nagarajan.

Or else we could just send Nagarajan an anonymous mail, telling that the whole symposium was utter crap and Janice is a bitch who would do anything for money. Its worthless and the students just had a nice vacation there. They partied, shopped, went to the casino, bunked the symposium and came back. Somehow, I like the second idea more :p

Yo! I liked the second idea too!
Btw they tried searching for a strip club too :P
Or we could send that news link abt the organizer being wanted criminal in Singapore!
Or, here is what I wrote. I really felt like adding the last point.  Sentimental value :P
Dear Sir,
As students who attended the Fourth University Scholar' Leadership Symposium, with a moral responsibility to bring forth the truth, we would sincerely recommend that the institute not send any delegates to this symposium. The reasons are as follows
1) Though the symposium arrangements were in accordance with the fees,  the lectures and the lecturers did not meet the expectation a regular IIT student with decent exposure to leadership symposiums and conferences would have.
2) The Symposium did ensure interaction with students from various South east and east Asian countries but communication was hampered by limited English skills possessed by many  and the absence of translators added to the problem we faced.
3) We also found the organizers to be negligent when they failed to take any accountability for the theft of a fellow delegate's laptop from the hotel room itself.

In the light of such  unheard grievances and irresponsible behavior displayed by the organisers, we would strongly advice against IIT Madras's participation in this symposium.
