Hey folks

I just completed building my first Surly. It's based around the Pacer frameset with SRAM Apex on it. Everything, including the wheels, are built at home.

That is a lovely bike, though that drop makes my back and neck hurt!

What dynamo is that? Also what tail light? I was looking for a seat post light and accidentally bought a seat *stay* light (Hermann's mini h-trace).

Ride uphill to make sure all the spokes are bedded.

The seatpost is probably a bit too high. Haven't adjusted it yet. The dynamo is a Shutter Precision PV-8 and the lights are B+M Avy and B+M Secula. The Secula is a seatstay light as well, but fits rather well on the seatpost. The ziptie it came with was too thick to properly wrap around the seatstay. I'll ditch it at some point and 3D print a mount.

Yeah I'll do a hill climb on saturday to ensure the spokes are bedded.

Also, my bartape is full-grain leather. Saddle is my trusty Brooks Swallow.

I really love that frame! I have ridden the pacer a few times and it is super comfortable!

It's discontinued now though. I got one of the last pieces in Happyearth stocks. TBA in Hyderabad tried making 4130 Cr-Mo frames under their own brand called Astr but it didn't take off well. That would've been equally good.

Beautiful!
Have you documented / blogged your process?
Building up a bike from frame+fork is not simple or straightforward esp. in India... Might help someone else...

Nice writeup!

That's a nice tool board.

I'm currently running a 11-26, and after yesterday's ride [report on its way], am seriously considering lower gears. Unfortunately, my RD capacity won't allow more than 28, so I'm looking at 12-28, since I rarely ride below 15. It's great that the Apex can handle such a wide range. What are the front chainrings?

I got my headset installed from the seller/manufacturer. It's too much of a specialty tool.

Re the spoke lengths, I would have gone for 285mm or 286mm and lived with the exposed threads. Any reason you decided not to use double-butted spokes? Another trick I noticed on my French bikes -- the spokes in front are thinner than the ones in the rear.

I have reluctantly gone back to (half) toe-clips since my MKS pedals are too slippery in the rain. I'm hoping not to go back to clipless.

Enjoy lots more rides!

P.S.: You're breaking the cardinal rule of bike photography -- drive side front!

P.P.S: I'm amazed at the complete lack of importing stuff directly. Glad to know there's a local ecosystem in place now!

Yes, the Apex supports upto 32. I have the Apex crankset itself with the usual 50/34 compact layout. I'm able to climb the Birla Mandir hillock here on my 11-26 itself on my Scott. So this should be even better. Compared to Shimano's lineup, Apex sits higher than Tiagra but more like a 10 speed 105. The Rival is a 11 speed Apex and the direct counterpart of the 105. Most things are cross compatible between Apex and Rival (even parts of the brifter, such as the paddles). I started liking this doubletap now.

I used shop tools to fix my headset but I did it myself under their supervision. I, however, also bought a bearing press as it's a good-to-have tool and will last a lifetime.

I did not find double butted spokes for the lengths I need. I had to get them cut as they were available at only 310mm. Also, my previous wheels were built with sapim leaders and they were really solid. So just went ahead. I'll get a spoke threading tool soon (again, available in local stores).

I also bought the iSSi road carbon pedals. There was only one pair in the mint gelato color and just couldn't miss them! I'll put them on the Scott if/when I build a trainer bike from it. They're Keo compatible. So I will need another pair of shoes as well :) But that's a story for another day.

Also, now I have a bag that fits my DJI Mavic Mini drone. So my bike is literally a pedal-powered aircraft carrier. It'll be interesting to attach a rack and permanently hold the drone on it. Like a helipad.
