UPANISHAD GANGA - A Brilliant series of Episodes aired on DD-1

Amidst all the hype which surrounds "SATYAMEVA JAYATE" in addition to
Aamir Khan's acting skills...............there is another serial which
started its telecast just about the same time on DD-1 at 10 am every
Sunday(still going strong) named UPANISHAD GANGA - directed by Dr
CHANDRAPRAKASH DWIVEDI of the "CHANAKYA FAME".
The serial has been well planned...culling out
stories from our ANCIENT INDIAN CULTURE i.e the VEDAS,UPANISHADS etc.
I found the serial well choreographed ...chronicling great INDIAN
personalities like CHANAKYA, SAGES like YAGNAVALKYA(The
Brihadaranyakopanishad) etc.
Initial episodes have revolved around themes of
PURUSHARTHAS etc - with a tilt towards MOKSHA which is understandable
as the core of INDIAN PHILOSOPHY is MOKSHA. Some episodes were also
dedicated to ANCIENT INDIAN MATHEMATICIANS - BHASKARACHARYA to be
precise and the story of his daughter LEELAVATI which also is
incidentally the name of his TREATISE..This episode emphasized the
importance and supremacy of GANITA!
This series provides a good introduction to INDIAN
CULTURE and is a good pointer to ALL THOSE who nurse LOVE and RESPECT
towards INDIAN CULTURE. Such serials, produced from time to time,
would go a long way in reinforcing,educating and encouraging people to
conserve INDIAN CULTURE and HERITAGE in the midst of all ineluctable
CHANGE and INFLUENCE from everywhere!
GANDHI's quote is very apt here: "I do not want my house to be walled
in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of
all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I
refuse to be blown off my feet by any". Serials such as these HELP us
in RETAINING OUR ROOTS while DEVELOPING NEW LEAVES and PREVENT us FROM
GETTING BLOWN AWAY!
SANSKRIT, VEDAS, UPANISHADS, PURANAS, INDIAN
MUSIC, ANCIENT INDIAN SCIENCE etc are prominent components of INDIA's
"SOFT POWER"....NOT JUST BOLLYWOOD as is touted!
ANOTHER INITIATIVE in conjunction with the serial has been an EASY
SANSKRIT LEARNING COURSE offered with the help of IGNOU(Indira Gandhi
