Dr Iyengar was one the doyens of India's Nuclear Pgm, heading BARC and
the AEC. His guide Dr Bertram Brockhouse, was a Nobel
laureate....though it was awarded in 1994 and not when Dr Iyengar was
his student.
He was also an astute administrator and Nuclear Policy specialist.
Nuclear Policy is an area which is more skewed towards the technical
intricacies and less towards administration ..... Hence, one cannot
have a Generalist IAS officer in charge in contrast to other areas
like Health etc. Nuclear Economics is a hot topic these days given
the Indo-US deal..though research on Newer Reactor Designs is in
limbo!
India would require a lot of Nuclear Engineers BEFORE the
implementation of the Indo-US deal gets underway - Dr Iyengar has made
signal contributions in this regard!
IIT Bombay has started a course in Nuclear Engineering which hitherto
was the exclusive preserve of BARC!
