On the last day of my “Official Academic Retirement “ from the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore on 30 April 2018, I feel a sense of joy and happiness. Joy that I have completed the journey that commenced 44 years ago, with the first class I taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign on 30 August 1974. The last class was taught by me at the Indian Institute of Science on Thursday 19 April 2018

During this long journey I have been blessed to have interacted with and influenced the careers and lives of over 3500 students. This is the Social Capital that I have been able to build

During this wonderful journey, I have also had the fortune to intellectually interact with several thousand professionals in Academia, Industry, Government, and Non Government Organizations.

To all of You, I offer my sincere thanks, as I acknowledge your immense contributions towards shaping my career. As I laid down my Official Teacher Robe yesterday 30 April 2018, I do so with a wonderful sense of pride and professional accomplishment. A sense of satisfaction that I could realise the dream I had as a “ fifteen year old” boy, when I prophetically answered the standard question of “What do you want to be “, with just one answer, “I want to be a Teacher “.
