I picked it up today and assembled it and carted it to the terrace of PD today.

Tried to catch Venus, but unfamiliarity with telescopes meant that I
couldn't. Tried Jupiter next, and was rewarded with Jupiter and 3 of
its moons!

Tried the Orion nebula and Pleiades next, but I don't yet know how to
aim and point and the telescope shows so many stars it's hard to
verify (for a beginner like me) whether I am looking at the correct
region!

Took a glance at the moon next, in all its cratered glory.

If anybody has any questions regarding construction of the telescope,
quality, etc., I'll try to answer as best as I can.

Also, somebody else from EE/ECE picked up a telescope from IIA today,
is he on this list?

yes i am the one from EE getting the telescope. I tried setting up yesterday but cudnt see anything but moon clearly. Has it got anything to do with alignment of the bottom mirror?? I was quite disappointed yesterday :'(

Where have you set it up?

I assume you're focussing using the eyepiece. Finding stars is
difficult in that scope. The planets are easy target, Jupiter is the
best bet for a first try, since if your telescope is right, you will
see the four moons!

They do not sell telescopes, but to commemorate 400 years of Galileo,
they did make a telescope available to the public. You can get it from
them, however I do not recommend it if you're a beginner.

Binoculars! 10x50 or equivalent :) Once you know the sky, the Orion
StarBlast has good reviews.

That telescope is not a very good price because: you'll need to add
eyepieces which are really hard to find for that size (0.95") instead
of the standard size (1.25"), you'll need to add a viewfinder, etc.

I've added some Barlows, some microscope lenses, and a home-made
viewfinder, but collimating it is very difficult due to the
construction. You'll need to do some DIY to it before it becomes a
decent telescope (the optics are nice). So if you want to just look at
the sky, it may not be the best option.

10x50 binoculars are really good. That's what we started off with when we began looking at the sky here. Any lower magnification is disappointing, and higher magnifications tend to make the picture shake when you're viewing.
The football ground is maybe the best place to start with. When you people switch off the lights at 8 after playing, it is a good time to start watching.

Am curious to know the specifications of the lenses/mirrors you have used.

What was the magnification? What is the diameter of the objective lens?

Hello Srinath,

The specs are available at the following location - http://www.iiap.res.in/files/Instruction_Manual_100mm_Newtonian_Telescope_1.pdf

Please check with them regarding the availability - I have no clue regarding that.

Regards,
Madhu.
