Thanks to a friend for pointing this out.

Powerful sky searching telescope grids with sophisticated data crunching algorithms exist just to find this sort of a thing (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palomar_Transient_Factory) , and yet university students were the first to discover it.

That is why we must do our bit too. Join http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zooniverse_(citizen_science_project) if you have the time :)

Do we have a working group at IISc where we meet regularly, or at least for specific events like conjunctions or eclipses and capture these events on cameras or the like??

we are more an informal group of loosely interested ppl who share random events via the forum. we could become more active if there is more interest.
