Newspapers Online: What future, at what price?

Worldwide, some newspapers charge readers to view online content while most others allow free access. Recently, The New York Times announced that it would stop charging readers for its online “Times Select” section, opening up most of its Web site for free.

In your opinion, is it wise for newspapers to allow free access online, versus charging readers for the privilege? Can online advertising provide a reliable revenue stream? What kind of future do you see for newspapers when more people are turning to the Internet for information? Participate in our discussion.

Points to ponder

Journalists and Jail: How to move forward?

“Journalists should not be jailed for performing their duty, rather they should be accorded the more unfettered access to information by the government since carrying out their duty puts a check on the excesses of the power that be. If jail becomes associated with journalism practice, it might result to malfunction in the profession which gives room for disorder and violation of the rule of law in the society.”
