Dear IIIF Community,
Within our Axiell Collections user base, we are seeing a rapidly growing desire to make collections accessible via IIIF. However, after discussions and analysis, it has become clear that the functional needs of the vast majority of our customers can be perfectly served using exclusively IIIF Level 0 (static image tiles). The technical complexity, hosting costs, and maintenance burden of a dynamic Image Server (Level 1 or 2) often present an unnecessary barrier for many of these institutions.
We want to make the transition to IIIF as simple as possible for these institutions by offering a standardized, low-barrier 'Level 0-first' approach.
I am curious about your views and experiences regarding the following points:
Generation: What tools or libraries are currently recommended by the community for the efficient and automated bulk generation of Level 0 tiles, specifically in a workflow directly driven by a Collection Management System?
Hosting & Distribution: What are the best practices for storing and serving these static files (e.g., via S3 and/or a CDN) when you want to set this up as a 'plug-and-play' solution for a large group of customers?
Experiences: Are there institutions or vendors in this group who have made a similar architectural choice and are willing to share their main takeaways with us?
Any insights, references to documentation, or examples of successful implementations are highly appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
Rob Jacobs
