Rebooted the server.  It had hit MaxClients, it seems from many many simultaneous requests to the validation services.  If it happens again, I'll see about switching the validation over to a separate system to avoid taking out the entire site when the validators are running slowly.

Thanks and sorry Martin. 

We’re working on restoring it. Looks like we really do need to separate the validator from the website, and maybe beef up the validator’s box.

The attacking site is now blacklisted, and I created an issue to address the problem via a capcha so that the validator can't be used as part of a robot controlled DDOS attack on others.

Thanks for taking a look at it.  Turns out that something is wonky with our local DNS.  Coworker experienced the same thing.
When I switched over to google's DNS, it worked just fine.
We'll investigate locally.
