Theme ‘Europe on the Ganges’
In the 18th and 19th century, the lower Gangetic delta region became the
arena for a historic supremacy battle between the major colonial
superpowers of Europe for establishing a nodal trade hub. Within a
riverine stretch of 50 kms along the Ganges, Bengal saw development of
colonial settlements of Portugese (Bandel), Dutch (Chinsurah), French
(Chandennagore), Danish (Serampore) and British (Calcutta & Howrah)
traders resembling a miniature model of Europe.
In establishing their trading bases, the European settlers had to cope with
the dangers of habitation within tropical mangrove estuarine forests
teeming with fauna, as well as infectious diseases like black fever,
malaria, dengue, cholera and typhus. In doing so, they also left their
indelible mark on their settlements by their architectural styles, some as
rich as their counterparts in Europe, culminating in the foundation of the
magnificent city of Calcutta – the 2nd capital of The British Empire.
