The much awaited Angkor/KulalaLampur trip countdown for Apr 1st wk 2011 has begun! 

The ruins of Angkor, seat of the Khmer empire, which flourished from approximately the 9th to 13th centuries, are located amid forests to the north of Cambodia. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples of the Angkor area number over one thousand, ranging in scale from brick rubble piles to the magnificent Angkor Wat, the world's largest single religious monument.

 

In 2007, an international team of researchers using satellite photographs and other modern techniques concluded that Angkor had been the largest preindustrial city in the world, with an elaborate system of infrastructure connecting an urban sprawl of at least 1000 square kilometres.

Siem Reap is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia, and is the gateway to Angkor region. It has

colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter, and around the Old Market. 

In the city, there are traditional Apsara dance performances, craft shops, silk farms, rice-paddy countryside, fishing villages and a bird sanctuary near the Tonle Sap Lake.
