ASMA Contest Number 3 Review
The problem task is to use five Vertical sticks (| | | | |) in order to make the number 12 using any arithmetic operations. Sticks are not allowed to cross or touch.
We can make a few key observations
If sticks are not allowed to cross or touch, there are no possible numbers/digits that can be created except for 1 which is just a stick itself, I
Arithmetic operations such as + (addition) or X (multiplication) are not able to be made leaving basic operations such as - and / left
Using these observations we narrow the amount of possibilities significantly to a small amount. We can now try out different combinations to see if we can arrive at a possible solution. We arrive at 3 solutions.
1 11/1
1 (integer) and 11/1 (fraction) = 1+11 = 12
11 1/1
11/1 (fraction) and 1 (integer) = 11+1 = 12
11 - - 1
11 minus negative 1 = 11- (-1) = 11+1 = 12
Any of these solutions work on the contest (personally 11 - - 1 is the most obvious and makes the most sense to me - which is also the solution I put on the contest).
