CJP says obsolete legal principles have little utility in contemporary times

KARACHI: “Our legal education is still predominately confined to a study of obsolete principles and complicated procedures, which have little utility in contemporary times. In order to address and reform our state of legal education, the role of law schools merits special attention,” said Supreme Court of Pakistan Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali.

THE Prevention of Electronic Crimes Bill 2015 is officially out of the National Assembly’s standing committee on IT. Committee chairman retired Capt Safdar, addressing the Assembly on Friday, presented a report, opening the bill up for debate by the house, as statements seem to indicate.

Madressah reforms

IN the National Action Plan (NAP), points 10 and 18 convey the state’s resolve to register and regulate madressahs and eradicate sectarian terrorism. Both actions fall primarily within the preview of the criminal justice system but we are still far from achieving these objectives. We need to undertake a forensic analysis of the madressah landscape in Pakistan before we can move forward.

ISLAMABAD: A Senate committee will take up on Monday (tomorrow) a four-year-old bill, aimed at providing protection and relief to journalists, but also containing a controversial clause about disclosure of source of information.

Police take down offensive anti-minority poster in Lahore after outrage

LAHORE: A hateful poster targeting a minority group was taken down from outside a mobile shop in Hafeez Center after a photo of the pamphlet ignited a social media storm on Thursday. Police said the issue was brought to the Gulberg Police's attention by "several people concerned by the nature of its contents". SHO Yousuf Butt took action against the complaint, and requested the shop owner to take the poster down from a store in the city's largest electronics market.
