PAKISTAN | Lack of quorum delays legislation on conflict of interest

The phenomenon of conflict of interest came into play and caused delay in the passage of the ‘Prevention of Conflict of Interest Bill 2016’ in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday as the session was prorogued after more than a year.

SRI LANKA | Constitution with basic structure that cannot be changed: Kiriella

The government is looking towards compiling a Constitution with a basic structure that cannot be changed forever, Senior Minister and Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.Kiriella told a media briefing that the intention of the government is to compile a Constitution with a basic structure that cannot be amended even if all 225 members of Parliament vote in favour of such a change.

INDIA | SC’s suggestion: Harsher punishment in child rape cases

The Supreme Court on Monday suggested the Parliament to think of awarding more stringent punishment to those convicted of raping children. The apex court made the observation during the hearing of a plea seeking castration of child abuse convicts filed by the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association (SCWLA).

The Delhi high court on Monday declined to interfere with the AAP government’s even-odd scheme of vehicle rationing in the capital, saying it was a policy decision taken based on expert knowledge to curb air pollution.

BANGLADESH | Madaya Syria: '400 residents need' urgent evacuation

Some 400 people in the besieged Syrian town of Madaya need to be urgently evacuated for medical treatment, says the New Zealand ambassador to the UN. Gerard van Bohemen was speaking after the UN Security Council discussed the crisis in the rebel-held town near Damascus. Earlier, an aid convoy brought food to 40,000 town residents who have been under government siege for six months. The UN says it has received credible reports of people dying of starvation.

NEPAL | NC’s Tarai lawmakers may register separate proposal

Madhes-based lawmakers of the Nepali Congress are preparing to register separate amendment proposal on the Bill on First Amendment of Constitution of Nepal, seeking to downsize the number of clusters to benefit from proportional inclusion and ensure more than 50 per cent constituencies in Tarai-Madhes region.

NEPAL | Bill to amend 99 laws tabled in House

The government on Wednesday tabled a Bill on Amendment of some acts to make them compatible with the new constitution. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Agni Prasad Kharel tabled the bill in the Parliament seeking amendments to 96 laws to make them compatible with the new constitution.

AFGHANISTAN | 58,212 Afghan refugees repatriated from Pakistan in 2015: UNHCR

As many as 58,212 registered Afghan refugees have repatriated to Afghanistan from Pakistan during the last year, 2015. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), these refugees were sent back to their country from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Baluchistan, Punjab, Islamabad and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Associated Press of Pakistan quoted an official source saying as, “UNHCR will assist each Afghan returnee with around USD 200 as a short-term integration and for transportation with additional grant of nearly $30 to $70 per head.”
