Input and Output documents with referrals

I have a question regarding input and output documents.

My use case is the following: I'm a GP referring my patient to a specialist to the hospital.

For this I want to use a WorkflowDocument and submit it to the hospital's XDS infrastructure.

I have a referral document (either a simple scanned PDF or a more machine friendly document), do I put this as the input document, as the output document, or both for the newly created workflow document?

Think of input and output in the context of the task to which the referenced documents are associated:

 

·         If the task is “Creating a Referral Request”, then the referral document is the output of this task.  That task will likely be placed in the complete state.

 

·         If the task is “evaluate a referral”, then the same document will be referenced as an input document of that task (as well as remain referenced in the “referral request” tasks above.

 

Does that clarify things ?
