Attached is a word document that shows my confusion about the HL7 continuation protocol.
I have been confused several times by various ITI CPs. The diagram is based on
- conversations at the Jan 2007 connectathon
- references in HL7 2.5
- the current ITI TF 3.0
This is not what I understood before Jan 2007 (but that is not really important).
My goal is to make sure
1. I can draw an accurate diagram to understand how the protocol works
with continuation (to support PDQ).
2. I can get the MESA tests repaired to prepare for the Berlin connectathon
3. We can properly document the Connectathon tests for Berlin.
For those of you who participated in the Chicago 2007 connectathon and were
confused by my instructions, here is your opportunity to help clear this up.
Once I can draw a proper figure (and no comments about my artwork or use of crayons),
I will either submit a CP with an appropriate figure or update the wiki with implementation notes.
regards,
Steve Moore

3.21.4.1.3.1 Immediate Acknowledgement
The Patient Demographics Supplier shall immediately return an RSP^K22 response message as specified below in Section 3.21.4.2, “Patient Demographics Response.” The RSP^K22 response message incorporates original mode application acknowledgment as specified in the “Acknowledgment Modes” section (ITI TF-2: C.1.3). The Supplier shall use MSH-3-Sending Application of the RSP^K22 to return the value it received from the Patient Demographics Consumer in Field MSH-5-Receiving Application of the QBP^Q22 message.
At Connectathon I volunteered to update the ITI with the correct protocol for PDQ continuation. The document did not contain the updates for the CP 111. This got missed when the document was updated.
Here is the updates I sent to Karen Witting after the Connectathon. To incorporate the correct PDQ behavior for the continuation protocol.
