Hello.

I found the following message about Pre-Connectathon Test of PDI PMC
Test1903 in Gazelle.

"Failed because there is a file with a name that exceeds 8 characters.
ERR: Length of file name exceeds 8 characters: DICOMINFO.INI
ERR: Full Path: \OTHER\VIEWER\LOCALE\JP\DICOMINFO.INI"

But message "PASSED" is displayed on the screen of IHE PDI Media
Tester.
So I don't know the message "PASSED" is correct or not.
Please give me your advice.

Best regards,

Yoshiba-san,

This looks like a bug in the toolkit. The PDI profile and transactions say that DICOM files are limited to 8 characters, but non-DICOM files do not have that restriction.

I believe this ERR message is a mistake. You should upload your result with a note indicating this.

The toolkit is right. DICOM (Part 12: Media Formats and Physical
Media for Media Interchange, Annex F: 120mm CD-R Medium 120mm CD-R)
and IHE PDI requires ISO 9660 Level 1 compliance of the file system.
Therefore non of the files on the CD can have a file name longer than
8 characters and a file name extension longer than 3 characters.

Gunter, thank you for the note.

Now I will assume the baseline error message was correct. The overall PASS should not have occurred.

Dear Mr. Moore, Mr. Zeilinger

Thank you for your advice.
We already revised software and finished to get a new log file.

Dear all,

Gunter's statement is almost, but not completely, correct.

IHE PDI (and also DICOM) require the presence of an ISO 9660 Level 1 filesystem.
Within that filesystem all filenames must be limited to 8 characters and a file
name extension not longer than 3 characters, also there are restrictions on which
characters may be used in filenames.

However, ISO 9660 permits multiple filesystems ("directory trees") to be present
on the same physical medium, fully or in part "pointing" to the same files.
Examples of such additional filesystems are Apple HFS, Rockridge, Joliet and UDF.

There is no requirement in DICOM or IHE PDI that long filenames cannot be used
on such additional filesystems, as long as an ISO 9660 filesystem is also present
and all filenames and directory names in the ISO 9660 filesystem are "level 1",
i.e. follow the 8+3 convention.

That said, certain filenames have to follow the ISO 9660 Level 1 convention on other
filesystems present on the same medium as well: DICOM filenames, because they are
referenced from the DICOMDIR, and PDI Web Content, because the hyperlinks in the
XHTML files need to work on all operating systems, no matter which file system
is "visible" (preferred) by the operating system of the Media Reader.

Other filenames, however, such as DLLs needed by an executable DICOM viewer included
on the same medium, may very well have long filenames e.g. in the Joliet filesystem
as long as they are either excluded or shortened to 8+3 in the ISO 9660 filesystem. Since
for example all Windows OS versions will always use a Joliet filesystem if present,
and ignore the ISO 9660 filesystem, it is perfectly acceptable to encode files that
will only ever be used on Windows machines (such as DLLs) using long Joliet filenames.

As far as the test software is concerned, the error message is correct if and only if
it applies to the ISO 9660 filesystem on the CD (which I cannot say for sure for the
current version of the MESA tools).

A manual check is easily possible on a Linux machine where a CD-R can be mounted
using the "norock" and "nojoliet" mount options which will "force" Linux to only use
the ISO 9660 filesystem and ignore Joliet or Rockridge if present.

With best regards,
Dr. Marco Eichelberg
