(Please pass on to those who may be interested. HISA Diagnostic
Imaging IT discussion list can be joined via www.hisa.org.au/ihe)
As a result of increasing file sizes (with some image sets running onto
several CDs) IHE Radiology Technical Committee has been examining the
extension of PDI to cover DVD drives. A recent trial at the North
American Connectathon was a technical success.
IHE is also examining including a range of other digital media (and
their acknowledged superiority to optical media with regard to speed of
data loading) based on USB interfaces (supporting USB flash drives, SD
cards, USB hard drives). The usecases which include image users
transporting images to remote sites eg. Theatre or home or storing
image libraries, or meeting referrer preferences for primary digital
image delivery. IHE in Asia-Pacific (Australia) has been a proponent of
extending the media options in support of views expressed by the Royal
Australian College of Surgeons that these type of media will be more
acceptable in some cases to surgeons.
A public consultation is to be held to discuss a draft profile
extension prepared by David Clunie which will run from 6am-8am
Thursday 27th February. (tomorrow)
Regional members of IHE are invited to participate or submit comments
directly to IHE radiology or via IHE regional group.
If these media are accepted then we expect to include them in the
IHE-Asia Pacific Connectathon to be held in July 2008 in Sydney.

_*Radiology IT industry members are encouraged to participate in the
Connectathon 2008 in Sydney for:
*_
* PDI - image delivery and loading off portable media
* Radiology Schedule workflow - integration of RIS, PACS and
Modality workflows
* Other radiology profiles - including Consistent Presentation of
Images
* XDS -Imaging - open web based profile for image sharing which
will replace over time portable media and augment web-PACS delivery.

Most major international companies are already IHE aware and now is the
time to promote this functionality in the Asia-Pacific Market
Regional companies need to have an IHE strategy in order to be locally
competitive and to have access to international markets.
