can the list maintainer please configure the list so that it does not accept
mail from someone not on the list so we don't get spam? trust me, this is
just the beginning now that a bot obviously has the list email address.

Already done -- I banned the offending spammer and put all messages to
be approved by the moderator (me). So hopefully this will be taken
care of.

there should be a way to only have to moderate messages not sent by a member
of the list.

The spammer had become a member -- I've changed the membership settings and also changed moderation settings so that new members have their comments moderated. Hopefully this will take care of the problem!
