The sequence only shows up when you are zoomed in to a sufficently small genomic region where individual nucleotides can be seen. The screen shot shows you are currently viewing the whole genome.
And in the whole genome view, the gene track is displayed as a histogram. You need to zoom into a chromosome to see the genes/transcripts.

I am having multiple issues with hg38 today. First, the sequence track is now completely blank. I tried to download it again, but it's still blank. A colleague is seeing the same thing with a fresh IGV install on a different macbook. Is the UCSC server down again? I tried to manually load the hg38.json file posted in another thread, but it didn't help either.
In addition, all I see when I load the Refseq Select or Curated tracks from the list of available datasets are histograms instead of sequences that I can expand and zoom in on.
Any thoughts?
