I'm completely uninformed about your application, so sorry up front for my ignorance. I'm in IT, supporting a doctor who uses 64-bit IGV on a Windows 7 PC. He has 32 GB of RAM with 15GB memory allocated to IGV, and 64-bit Java 8 u73 installed. Several Windows and Office updates were installed over the weekend, and since then IGV is failing to launch. I'm attaching logs in case they help explain what's happening. Have there been similar reports since the latest round of Microsoft patching? If not, I need to know what questions to ask my user to determine what's going on. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

There is nothing in the logs that is helpful.  Could you elaborate on what you mean by “failing to launch…”.   Any error messages would be helpful.    Is you user launching from the Java Web Start (jnlp) links, or some other way?    If launching from jnlp make sure the .jnlp extension is associated with the 64-bit Java virtual machine.   If you have both 32-bit and 64-bit java runtimes installed you might have lost the association during the patching.

You can get more diagnostics by launching the jnlp files from the command line, on most platforms this is done as follows

javaws <path to your jnlp file>

Try this and see what’s printed out, this should pinpoint the problem.

I got some error messages from my end user. It looks like he's trying to start the program from a web interface. His words:

"After about 1 minute of try to start the IGV in Java, I get the following message:"

What he's seeing is an error message titled "javaws.exe - Application Error", "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."

He also reports seeing a different Java error when he's not trying to run IGV, but it might be related. Window title is 'Java(TM) Web Start 11.73.2.02-fcs' and the message is "Error encountered while invoking Java Web Start (SysExec) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_73\bin\javaws.exe"

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

The error message is clear enough,  but this is not from IGV.  The user is not able to run the Java launcher,  C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_73\bin\javaws.exe.   Could you verify that is installed at that location?   This is a general problem, not IGV specific,  with the Java installation on this machine.
