But matters of chronology and prior influence are only themost obvious flaws in the Promethean myth. There are two subtlerissues. First, it assumes that Xerox PARC's ideas weren't well-knownbefore Apple engineers saw them, or had even been actively kepthidden from public view. A review of PARC's history will helpmake sense of that assumption. Second, it places commercializationon a lower plane than invention. Whatever differences there werebetween the Alto and Macintosh are relatively unimportant, becausedevelopment is less significant than research.
