hi all,
One of the interns in our applicant pool is "free" - he has a scholarship that provides his funding.  So if you're interested but don't have any funds, perhaps you will consider taking this one.  His name is Andre Reis; he's an exchange student from Brazil and he's been at Hopkins all year (see his emails to me below).

So if funding was a barrier and you're interested in having Andre as your intern, please let Liliana know.  She can send you his complete application if you want to see it.

Hello Dr. Salzberg,

my scholarship provides me all the necessary funding, so I just need a place to intern and learn.
I know how to program in Python, but I'm also taking Intermediate programming this semester in which I'll learn C and C++.
I also know the basics of Matlab and I'll learn R in another course I'm taking. My primary interest here is to do computational work, so that would be really great for me.

Best regards,

Andre Reis.

hi Andre,
One question: do you need funding for the summer, or just a place to intern and learn?
A second question: do you know how to program, and if so how well?

We have a summer intern program, but we only have funding for very few students.  If you have your own funding then it would be easier for us to find a place for you.  But we only do computational work, so all the interns have to know how to program.

Dear Dr. Salzberg,

my name is Andre Reis and I'm an undergraduate exchange student here at Hopkins for the academic year of 2013-14. I have a scholarship given by the brazilian government  through a scientific mobility program called Science without Borders. In Brazil, my major is in Biology but I am leaning towards Bioinformatics, and I'm really taking this opportunity here to expand my skills and knowledge of this field. One of the requirements of the brazilian program is that I spend sometime, during the summer, in a lab here to experience a different research environment. I was interested in your profile and research, and so I would like to know if I could meet you sometime to get know more about you do.

Best regards,

Andre Luiz Martins Reis.
