On a recent trip to Japan I stopped by Kyoto, where there happened to be a calligraphy exhibit opened in the Shimadai Gallery, a relatively small museum located walking distance from Karasuma Oike Station.
By the way, I have plans to document another calligraphy-related activity I did in Kyoto on my new podcast here. And if you want to see more pictures and videos about my recent trip, check out this video on Youtube.

The year and place of creation " 1938, Tea Field " in black ink are present on the left of the scroll. Below, the stamp (made of jade) of the artist in red ink, and the stamp of the tea field in red ink as well. On the higher right, there is the stamp of the city Chang An (today known as Xi'an ), an ancient city governed by more than ten Chinese dynasties.
Xuan paper is very ancient and was used in China for writing and painting. It is famous for the softness and fineness of its texture, ideal for rendering at its best the artistic expression, be it calligraphy or painting, of Chinese artists. The artwork is framed by the Zhuangbiao , a particular framing method for paintings and calligraphy on Xuan or rice paper, of a golden fabric with a dragon pattern, applied on paper.
All of our handmade artwork is made by Simone Doenvang unless otherwise specified. The calligraphy used for our designs is made by professional calligraphers and purchased with a license for commercial use. The Doenvang Team takes all photography unless specified, with all rights reserved. No images are allowed to be replicated or used in any way without written consent from Doenvang.
Our prints are produced on 180gsm Museum-quality posters made on thick and long-lasting matte (uncoated) paper and are shipped in secure cardboard tubes. They are printed on a high-quality photo printer, bringing more color and depth into the prints. In larger orders, the prints are separated by a layer of silk paper.
Our frames are produced in Europe and have high quality with a stable frame and strong backside, with a metal hanger. The frames are with plexiglass, which is secure to ship and has a protective layer on both sides of the plexiglass, which needs to be removed upon using the frame.
Although there are still quite a few people who practice calligraphy for leisure, very few take the time to study, in depth, the history and various aspects of the art of writing calligraphy. Mei Hung, Executive Director of Chinese Culture Connection, is one of those people. In September 2013, Qianshen Bai and Mei Hung were awarded a Traditional Arts Apprenticeship by Mass Cultural Council.
In addition to learning the subtleties of the techniques in writing balanced and artistic calligraphy, Mei Hung learned to appreciate a piece of good work with a critical eye. During their 8-month apprenticeship, Mei was introduced to writing couplets, horizontal banners, and, in a smaller font, on fan shaped calligraphy. In addition to learning how to compose the writing in various styles, she completed the composition with date and signature, and the proper way to apply the seal.

We introduce a novel intelligent system which can generate new Chinese calligraphic artwork that meets certain aesthetic requirements automatically. In the machine learning phase, parametric representations of existent calligraphic artwork are derived from input images of calligraphy. Using a six-level hierarchical representation, the acquired knowledge is organized as a small structural stroke database, which is then exploited by a constraint-based analogous reasoning component to create artwork in new styles. A set of geometric constraints is proposed and incorporated into the system for rejecting the aesthetically unacceptable results. The combination of knowledge from various input sources creates a huge space for the intelligent system to explore and produce new calligraphy.
