Dear Prabhakar S.V.R.K.,

Climate change is now widely recognized among the scientific and political communities as a serious threat to sustainable development and demanding an urgent global response.

According to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007), “climate change will have wide-ranging effects on the environment, and socio-economic sectors, including water resources, agriculture and food security, human health, terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity and coastal zones. This necessitates immediate actions; otherwise by the end of the century, 5-20% of global GDP could be lost annually, according to the Stern Report of 2006.  While global action is required to avoid these long-term consequences, climate change is already affecting the risk of disasters today, and needs to be factored into economic development, poverty reduction and disaster management strategies.

Current scientific models are not able to assess the consequences of climate change with complete certainty; but there are several reliable methods to understand the risks and to develop cost-effective options to reduce these risks. Climate change adaptation and mitigation are smart investments to protect economic assets and stimulate innovation by opening a wide range of opportunities for growth and development along the way.

EMI in partnership with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) will be conducting an online course on Climate Change and Disaster Risk from May 28-June 27, 2012.  We would like to invite you and members of your organization to participate in this course.

In this one-month specialization course, participants will develop an understanding of the causes and implications of climate change and their linkages to disaster risk management. They will be provided with case studies and will learn about adaptation and mitigation strategies, methods and tools for integrated climate risk management.

Online registration is now open until May 25, 2012 through the link below.
