Current demands in high-technology industries such as semiconductor, optics, MEMS, etc. have predicated the need for manufacturing processes that can fabricate increasingly smaller features reliably at very high tolerances. In situ monitoring systems that can be used to characterize, control, and improve the fabrication of these smaller features are therefore needed to meet increasing demands in precision and quality. This paper discusses the unique requirements of monitoring of precision manufacturing processes, and the suitability of acoustic emission (AE) as a monitoring technique at the precision scale. Details are then given on the use of AE sensor technology in the monitoring of precision manufacturing processes; grinding, chemical\u2013mechanical planarization (CMP) and ultraprecision diamond turning in particular.

Research in the LMAS is concerned with the analysis and improvement of manufacturing\n processes and the development of tools to analyze sustainability. Research projects\n address: metrics and analytical tools for assessing the impact of processes including\n design for sustainability, systems and enterprises, modeling sustainable,\n environmentally-conscious manufacturing processes and systems, green supply chains,\n manufacturing technology for reduced impact, manufacturing technology for producing\n advanced energy sources or storage cleantech and sustainable products and systems.\n Specifically, research is focused on minimizing/removing contaminants and machining\n defects during manufacture, improving the precision and repeatability of chemical\n mechanical polishing, green machine tools and processes, sustainable packaging, and\n modeling sustainable, environmentally-conscious manufacturing processes and systems. The\n main lab groups within the LMAS are Precision Manufacturing, Green Engineering, and SMP\n (the Sustainable Manufacturing Partnership). An earlier research effort CODEF\n (Consortium on Deburring and Edge Finishing) has completed its work. Each of these\n groups conduct research with an eye to sustainability, and maintain a common goal of\n reducing waste (time, energy, materials).
