As we look beyond version 2 to future versions of iFolder for iPhone, it would be great to get an idea of what our users would like to prioritise. For example, here are some of the things we have considered.

  1. Ability to send files by email link rather than attachment
  2. Ability to send files to dropbox
  3. Ability to send files to box.net
  4. Ability to upload photos and video into your iFolder
  5. Ability to export files from iWork into your iFolder (via a webDav bridge)
  6. Ability to add annotations / comments
  7. ...
There's a lot we could do, but it would be great to know what would help you out the most.

ALTERNATIVELY

Would you prefer that we focussed efforts on other platforms - eg Android?

My deployment of iFolder was as an alternative to dropbox and box.net that met my corporate requirements of having an inhouse server that I could manage. While I can understand some suggesting the ability to send files between the cloud systems, that would defeat why I chose to implement iFolder in the 1st place. Unless there was a way to lock that feature out securely. I do like the idea of photos and video upload or perhaps even the ability to upload any files such as pdfs that have been downloaded locally to the iphone from the web. I am wating on a ship date for my iPAD2 and will install this version for testing.

My concern would be that if iFolder doesn't offer features that users of Dropbox et al expect, then despite the best intentions of IT departments, users will naturally gravitate towards the services that work for them, regardless of the security implications. It's a tricky balance to get right as each organisation will have specific security requirements.

I do like the idea of being able to lock features out securely. One thing we have been considering is developing a mobile admin portal for the ifolder administrators of a particular domain. This could be used to enable or disable features for all users accessing a particular iFolder installation.

I agree 100%. iFolder is usually implemented as an alternative use case to Dropbox, Boxee, etc..

I would really like to see the ability to upload ANY file type.

"I would really like to see the ability to upload ANY file type"

This seems like a nice idea, but how would those files get onto the iPad in the first place? The reason I ask is that Apple don't expose the file system directly - so whilst we could enable you to upload any file explicitly synchronised with iTunes for example, this seems not very useful since it implies the file must have been on your computer already and you could therefore use the Mac client or the web client on the computer.

The one mechanism Apple do provide is the ability for applications to register to open particular file types. So for example, iFolder could indeed register to work with any filetype and then by implementing an upload option, we could achieve this functionality - BUT, and it's a pretty huge BUT, this relies on the file creation application actually exposing the "Open In" functionality. Not many apps seem to do this yet :( And to add insult to injury, Apples own iWork suite don't expose functionality this way and so we are unable to get any documents OUT of Pages, Numbers etc in this way.

What iWork DOES do that is useful is allow you to send documents to WebDav. This then means we can setup a bridge from our WebDAV service into your iFolder account (assuming we don't need VPN access) to enable documents to be pushed in from Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc.

I'm not sure it's a very satisfactory solution though.

What would be very helpful would be to see some use cases outlined - ie what workflow would you like to see in particular? The solutions available may depend on the types of files you need to work on and the applications that you prefer using to create/edit them.

I would also add the ability to open in QuickOffice...but I'm assuming
if it can open up in iWork it'll have the ability to open in
QuickOffice too!

Thanks for making such a great product! It was the last piece needed
(a mobile client of some sort).

If you need a beta tester of any sort please feel free to seek me out!
( I use iFolder heavily and have an iPad with your app on it)
