Over the past couple weeks there have been some in-depth discussions surrounding the login issues between ourselves, engineers at Novell and a major Novell customer who has been instrumental in driving this forwards (thanks David).

The timing of all this was unfortunate as it coincided with the sale of Novell and the obvious uncertainty this caused within various departments and product teams.

The good news seems to be that it has now been accepted as a server side bug and marked for a high priority fix.

The project lead has scheduled time later this week for a more detailed investigation so I hope to be able to report back with more news next week. There may yet be workarounds that can be identified by Novell once the precise cause can be determined.

My early optimism that the login issues might be addressed by Novell may have been misplaced. I had an exchange with David Chenworth at Novell this afternoon and it seems that Novell have now decided NOT to support the SOAP interface to iFolder and the engineer allocated to look into the server fault has been tasked with resolving issues elsewhere :-(

Whether we continue with the mobile client is therefore somewhat up in the air. We don't at present have the mono expertise to resolve the fault in-house and even if we were to isolate the fault and determine a patch, it looks unlikely that Novell would accept the fix for the official product line.

As a tangent, some of you may be aware of a gathering of iFolder advocates who are preparing to fork the official product in order to protect it given the uncertainty over the future of various Novell product lines and also to accelerate development of new features that could enable iFolder to become more of a mainstream enterprise storage option. The working title of the group is 'nofolder' and you may wish to keep an eye on developments over at their google group.

I know that some of you are having independent discussions with Novell over this very issue, so this may not be the final word on the matter (I would hope it might not be), but as of the present time, it looks as if an official solution to the problem won't be forthcoming.
