Dear colleagues,
The IFLA Regional workshop scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya
from 16-18 October 2023, hosted by the Kenya National Library Service,
ends today. It has attracted fifty-six participants from thirty-seven
countries.
According to IFLA, working at a regional level is important because of
the following reasons:
i. IFLA's Global Vision stresses the need to be a more regionally
relevant organisation. Through this, IFLA gets closer to the goal of
being not just an international federation, but a truly global one.
ii. working regionally opens up possibilities to strengthen services,
accelerate innovation, and realise economies of scale. It is believed
that libraries in the same region (or sub-region) face similar contexts
and so have possibilities to collaborate in ways that pay off at the
national and local levels. This supports the sustainability of
libraries, nationally and locally.
iii. when we work regionally, there are partnerships to form and
develop. Just as we seek out partnerships at the local and national
levels in order to amplify our impact, we can also do this at the
regional level.
iv. it provides an opportunity to work towards the sustainable
development of the regional library field in Sub-Saharan Africa.
By end of this workshop, participants have been able to:
i. know the national fields better
ii. acquire ideas on possibilities of working with the United Nations
and other potential funders
iii. acquire knowledge to further input to the Library Map of the World
iv. share the results of national library field sustainability indexes
v. understand better how they can support a sustainable library field in
Sub Saharan Africa
vi. extend their engagement in and with IFLA
vii. commit themselves to IFLA by shaping an IFLA ‘offer’ that responds
to the needs of the region
viii. identify a step to help emerging leaders
ix. build networks, among others
The participants extend their appreciation to the Fairview Management
for the warm reception, the warm welcome and hosting by Kenya National
Library Service under the leadership of Dr Charles Ngui Ndivo, CEO and
Director, Bishop Robert Theuri Maina, KNLS Board Chair and Dr Peter
Gatiti, Chair, Kenya Library Association.

The Regional Division Committee Meeting has started this afternoon and
goes on until tomorrow, 19 October 2023
