librarians, Ellen Tise, with their Lifetime Achievement Award at the LIASA
Conference dinner in Somerset West on 12 October. This prestigious award
recognises an extraordinary career of service, commitment and impact on the

In presenting the award jointly with the LIASA President, Nazeem Hardy,

of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) from 2009 – 2011, with many
other highlights along the way.
From humble beginnings as a library assistant at the then University of the
Orange Free State, Ellen Tise went on to senior positions, including Deputy

Librarian at the University of the Western Cape and, since 2006, Senior
Director of Library and Information Services at Stellenbosch University. Her
academic path culminated in an MPhil degree in Science and Technology Studies
from Stellenbosch University.

2010 she received a Special Recognition Award from the Association of College
and Research Libraries for her leadership and contributions to international
librarianship. She has also been honoured with several Stellenbosch
University Rector’s Awards and a Chancellor’s Award in 2020.

This stellar career and professional involvement continues serving as
Chairperson of the South African National Library and Information Consortium,

Advisory Committee, IFLA’s Copyright and Legal Matters Advisory Committee and
other bodies.
Ellen Tise’s extraordinary journey has encompassed exemplary service, many
achievements along the way, and considerable influence on and a great
contribution to the library profession on a global scale.
