Dear Citizens of chennai
Raj(IIT alumini 66) started a Karmayog chennai yahoo group( mail list), with kind of similar idea inspired by karmayog of mumbai, official karmayog started july17 at wood lands drive in over a cup of coffee; It went to little bit of trouble due to moderation issues and some spam and people not knowing how to use the membership options.Currently there are about 400 members but only about 50 active members all others are passive.
I see this great group called ifix which also has been started almost around the same time August 15 2007 over cup of coffee, with almost similar objectives of talking action on the things we would like to change, "Be the change" as gandhi would say
Then there is CIOSA(a federation of social organisation in chennai), there is Chennai city connect ( wanting to start small infra Projects in distributed fashion like footpaths initiated by citizen groups), there is karmayog chennai ( for info exchange for social action in the city) there is ifix ( A youthful group wanting to take action things they wish to change in the city)
If only we are all willing to loose our branding (which might be close to some hearts and yahoo google group divide) for the objective( i believe this is closer to our hearts). I don't see why there should be multiple groups with the same objective. we might differ in our views but i think there is much more
unifying goal of better Quality of life in chennai for all us.
I propose (honestly this is not even my idea, i think it is unconscious desire in us to be connected and united)
One great infomation exchange webside for social action for the city we love and One huge citizen mailing list at the city level would make ourselves strong and effective and well informed at the city level and Start forming Area level Citizen Action clubs/Groups.
Mumbai has been able to do it with karmayog intiative by Vinay. We have also started doing but if only we all unite i think it will become a much larger movement for action.
Please do reply with your comments and if you like the idea lets us meet and discuss and take this forward and futher increase the membership in our mailing list and effectively moderate and find better means of communicaton for inititives in the city. Also kindly forward to people whom you think might be interested to join.
Cheers Chennai
