Hi All
Hope 2011 is treated you well. Below is the link to our mental health reform programme, which is not going that well but has good aspirations and a document on mental health and social inclusion which provides the evidence on the importance of employment to social inclusion.

Now the ask !! Our discussions in Amsterdam has motivated me to try to get cognitive remediation going in our service. To start I’m keen to establish the quantity of people who need it . The problem is we don’t have the resources to complete a full neuropsych assessment. Any suggestions? One idea we had was to introduce a screening assessment and get the full assessment done on those who fall below norms, but we have yet to find a recommended assessment for this purpose, anyone know of one?
Looking forward to hearing from you
Best wishes
Niall

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in replying. I agree that we need to start screening for the difficulties but, in my experience, the number of people affected on each team caseload may be too small to warrant the purchase of specialist tools. I've borrowed screening tools from the fields of neurology / acquired brain injury and then to identify attention, memory, information processing and executive function difficulties when cognitive impairment is suspected. They are quite useful for carers and/or care coordinators to complete in the first instance. I have paper copies but will aim to have them transcribed and send them out online. I'd be very interested in finding out how many people on the average caseload are suspected of having cognitive impairments, so if anyone has any stats I'd love to hear about it.
I've also just recently completed the training to carry out memory, attention and executive function testing using Doors and People (Baddeley et al, 2006), the Test of Everyday Attention (TEA), (Robertson et al, 1994) and the Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS), (Wilson et al , 1996). These are functional tests that mirror everyday tasks and therefore may be more appropriate for our client group. I haven't been able to find the money to purchase the testing kits, but when I do I will try to ascertain the extent of the problem in our team.
Best Wishes
