Correction to Hunger Awareness Article

There was an error in the number of people in North Carolina facing hunger. It should have said about 1.08 million people. We thank our faithful readers who caught the mistake.

Did you know there are about 1.08 million people in North Carolina facing hunger today?

Did you know 13% of your fellow Orange county residents live in hunger?

The National Hunger Awareness Day was created to raise awareness about hunger and malnutrition in the United States, and to encourage positive changes in our communities.

This month, you can make a difference in the lives of local families and individuals by taking these simple steps:

  • Donate to food banks either in person or online

  • Donate to local fundraisings relate to food insecurity

  • Volunteer at local events that raise awareness about food insecurity

  • Spread the word about food and nutrition programs offered in North Carolina:

    • SNAP - The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps.

    • WIC - The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children provides healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition and community services to new mothers, pregnant women and caretakers.

    • Congregate Meals for Older Adults - This program provides a lunch time meal to older adults, which offers one third of the recommended daily dietary allowance.

    • Senior Farmers Market Program - Provides benefits to low-income older adults in participating counties to purchase locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs.

To learn more about these programs or to apply for SNAP, please contact the More In My Basket program toll free at 1-855-240-1451 (for English) or 1-888-382-7105 (for Spanish).
