Column Calendar of Departures
Date: 20 Jan 05:30 AM
Votes: Good: 11   Bad: 0 Abstain: 0

On average, the middle of January is the coldest period of the year and the weather over the past few days has followed suit. The featured chart presents a column calendar of daily high temperature departures for Des Moines since 1 February 2025. Most of the past 30 days have been dominated by above average high temperatures, but this past weekend and at least the upcoming week will be below average. The chart nicely shows how the largest of high temperature departures are mostly confined to the coldest half of the year, where temperature variability is the largest. The warm season features warmer soil temperatures and higher humidity levels, which both help to modulate temperature fluctuations.
