Historic NE US Blizzard
Date: 24 Feb 05:30 AM
Votes: Good: 16   Bad: 0 Abstain: 0

A powerful "Nor'easter" brought a historic blizzard to the northeastern US on Monday. Snowfall totals between two to three feet(!!) were reported over an isolated band stretching from New Jersey to Boston. One of the locations within this band was Providence, RI which reported a storm total of 37.9" of snow, which far exceeded a previous record snowfall event of 28.6". The featured chart presents a time series of visibility and wind gust reports from the airport along with the coincident blizzard warning. The shaded region within the blizzard warning is a consecutive observation period with visibility at or below a quarter mile and wind gusts above 35 MPH for at least three hours (blizzard criterion). There is already rumbling how this storm compares against previous historic Nor'easter events, including the "Storm of the Century" during 1993. You can find an accounting and index to rank these storms on the NCEI RSI website. It will take a few days before Monday's storm is included within that page.
