The record warm temperatures last week were quickly followed by a significant rainfall event on Thursday into Friday with widespread amounts of at least an inch and even a few isolated two inch amounts. Once such two inch report was from Guttenberg (NE Iowa). The NWS COOP site there reported exactly two inches and the featured chart presents the top ten January precipitation events for the site over its period of record. The two inch report is easily the largest on record and even more remarkable when one notes that there are only three other instances of an inch or larger over a single 24 hour period! NWS La Crosse has put together a nice summary of this event and lists out the large number of new January precipitation records that were set.
