For the Des Moines airport, the coolest low temperature so far this fall season was observed Thursday morning at 34°F. Perhaps the taste of fall weather this week has some Iowans thinking about warmer weather places to go. So for today's featured chart, daily high and low temperatures are compared with Juneau, Alaska. The chart presents the daily difference in high and low temperature between the two sites with positive values (red bars) indicating Des Moines being warmer and negative values (blue bars) indicating Juneau being warmer. It is certainly interesting and perhaps not intuitive to see the Juneau being warmer days mostly confined to the winter season. Of course, the Juneau airport is near sea level elevation, surrounded by plenty of water and somewhat protected from cold continental air masses by nearby mountains, all of which help to moderate temperatures during the winter season. Des Moines has none of these things going for it and subject to the cold continental and arctic air masses that will soon be frequenting Iowa.
