Daily Feature

Hot June Hours
Date: 30 Jun 05:30 AM
Votes: Good: 12   Bad: 1 Abstain: 1

While temperatures did back off somewhat on Sunday, it was still a rather hot weekend for June with heat index values in the 90s for much of the daytime Saturday and a few hours on Sunday for Des Moines. The featured chart presents the number of June hours with a heat index reading for at least 90 degrees. The top panel shows the number of hours per year with the bottom panel showing an hour of day accounting with a simple climatology. Remarkably, a number of years are shown with zero such hours during the month of June. One only needs to look back two years ago, 2023, for a total of just five hours. The 2025 total doesn't quite crack the top 10 yet and the forecast for today doesn't have such hot temperatures, so the accumulation may be it as we have made it to the end of June!
