Daily Feature

Wind Rose for Warm November Temps
Date: 14 Nov 05:30 AM
Votes: Good: 14   Bad: 0 Abstain: 0

After last weekend feeling more like winter, temperatures have warmed this week with high temperatures well into the 60s and even a few 70s on Thursday. We'll have another few warm days in store before a storm arrives to start off the next week and a return to more seasonable temperatures. But for this fine Friday, temperatures will again warm into the 60s with a south-southwesterly breeze. That wind direction and warm November temperature combination is the subject of today's daily feature. The featured wind rose is valid for Des Moines during November when the air temperature is at least 65°F. A wind rose is a stacked histogram that shows the frequency of a given wind direction and speed combination. The plot uses the meteorological convention of reporting wind direction as the direction the wind is blowing from (a southerly wind blows from south toward the north). The dominance of southerly and south-southwesterly winds are clear with near no events found within the NE quadrant.
